What happened here?
Tifft Nature Preserve is a 264-acre urban wildlife refuge on former docklands. Portions were used as a City of Buffalo dump in the 1950s and 1960s before municipal waste was capped with clay and soil and the landscape was reshaped for habitat and public use.
The preserve now combines a 75-acre cattail marsh, woodlands, grasslands, ponds, trails, and environmental education. Its success as habitat is inseparable from the history of containment and ecological restoration beneath and around the modern preserve.

Nineteenth century-mid-1900s
Farm and marsh became a transportation and industrial landscape
Land associated with George Washington Tifft's farm later supported rail lines and a transshipment center for coal and iron ore. Industry and filling altered the larger marsh system even as wetland habitat persisted.
1950s-1970s
A city dump proposal produced a preservation campaign
The property received municipal refuse during the 1950s and 1960s and was acquired for additional landfill use. Concerned citizens recognized the remaining habitat and persuaded city officials to incorporate preservation into the site's future.
1976-present
Containment and habitat restoration created a public refuge
Nearly two million cubic feet of municipal waste was enclosed in clay and covered with soil, ponds were enlarged, and vegetation was established. The preserve opened in 1976 and later joined the Buffalo Museum of Science, supporting environmental education and five miles of trails and boardwalks.

The property formed part of Buffalo's rail- and water-served industrial waterfront.
