What happened here?

The Point Drive station began operating in 1948 with two 100-megawatt coal-fired units. Two additional 200-megawatt units were added in 1959 and 1960, making the waterfront complex a major regional generating station.

The station added or upgraded air-pollution controls over time, including electrostatic precipitators beginning in 1972 and fabric filtration, trona injection, carbon injection, and selective non-catalytic reduction work between 2009 and 2011.

This entry records the retired industrial facility and its air-permit history, not a DEC remediation-site designation.

Coal-combustion residuals were managed at a separate landfill in Pomfret, which has its own map entry and regulatory record.

1948-1960

Four generating units made the waterfront a regional power center

Two 100-megawatt units began operating in 1948, followed by two 200-megawatt units in 1959 and 1960. Plant jobs, fuel deliveries, contracts, and tax-equivalent payments tied the station to the city's economy for decades.

2012-2016

Mothballing and retirement displaced workers and destabilized budgets

The generating units shut down in stages as coal power became less competitive. State records describe dozens of layoffs and a steep reduction in payments to local government, creating consequences well outside the industrial fence.

After closure

Transition aid bought time but did not select a new future

New York created assistance for communities losing power-plant revenue, helping the city, county, and school system adjust. The station's ownership, demolition, waterfront reuse, and the separate Pomfret fly-ash landfill remain continuing questions.
