What happened here?
FMC's Middleport plant began manufacturing arsenic-based pesticides and other products in the 1920s. The plant is the source property, but the later investigation expanded into the village because historical air emissions, runoff, drainage, and material handling created possible routes beyond the fence line.
Arsenic became the defining off-site contaminant. Investigators divided the work into geographic study and remediation areas rather than labeling Middleport as one uniformly affected place. Sampling and cleanup decisions were made property by property.
The off-site program reached homes, businesses, village land, and portions of the Royalton-Hartland school property. Excavation therefore involved more than removing soil: contractors had to document existing yards and features, replace clean soil, restore landscaping and pavement, and coordinate work around residents and school operations.
Facility corrective action remains a separate regulatory track. A completed residential excavation does not mean every on-site groundwater, drainage, or waste-management obligation at the manufacturing property is finished.
