What happened here?

Motor Island was developed for a private motorboat club, including marina facilities and a vertical bulkhead that replaced most of its natural shoreline. After boating use was abandoned, its trees became important nesting habitat for colonial waterbirds.

Between Motor and Strawberry islands, historic gravel extraction removed a small group of islands and left comparatively uniform shallow water. The Niagara River Area of Concern restoration program later treated both places as opportunities to rebuild habitat complexity.

Historic development

A private motorboat club added marina facilities and a vertical bulkhead to Motor Island. Between Motor and Strawberry islands, gravel removal reduced a small island group to comparatively uniform shallow water.

1998-2013

Public acquisition and construction reversed part of the physical loss

New York acquired Motor Island to protect colonial nesting birds and fish habitat. Power Authority projects regraded hardened shoreline and added berms, substrate, rock, woody material, and marsh plantings in the former Frog Island area.

Continuing management

The rebuilt landscape still responds to wakes, ice, and high water

Erosion and wave energy required later maintenance and improved protection. Motor Island remains closed to landing so nesting birds can use it, while the restoration is evaluated as habitat—not as a hazardous-waste cleanup.
